Each and every year, the Key Biscayne
Art Festival is one of the most eagerly anticipated events on the Island.
It is one of those events that binds the
community and is where a person can see those that he or she has not seen
since, well, last years Art Festival. Speaking of last
years Art Festival, click here to have a look.
Over the past now 41 years that the Key
Biscayne Art Festival has been going on, it has adapted in product in relation
to the ever changing face of Key Biscayne. Back in the 1970's, it
was nearly completely local artists showing off and selling their art to
their next door neighbor in many cases. It was one watercolor booth
after another and watercolor art of the Key Biscayne lighthouse were a
dime a dozen. Maybe not that cheap, but close to it.
Most of the art back then was not really judged on how any one piece of
art or artist fared against the world community of Art as a whole, but
rather it was judged to be best of show as if there was no other Art in
the world except for what was on display at the Key Biscayne Art Festival.
It used to be held in the middle of the
Island. Very close to where the current Village Green is. Word
spread into Coconut Grove (where the REAL artist were) and it was not too
long before the Key Biscayne Art Festival had many of the artists who were
touring the country doing one Art Show after the next. Many of the
artists slept in their vans along side of the the road. It was a
more casual time, but the time was short lived as word got out, more and
more vans appeared, then Motor homes and then that was not allowed at all.
This ruling (or enforcement of a current
ruling) was rumored to be the end of the Key Biscayne Art Festival.
Most of the older artists who could actually sell something were dying
off or moving off of Key Biscayne, and it was thought that if out of State
artists could not spend the night like a gypsy on the side of the road,
nobody would show up. There were a couple, perhaps a few lean years.
The Key Biscayne Art Festival was then
scheduled to coincide with the Coconut
Grove Art Festival by being held one week in advance of the
Coconut Grove Art Festival. The thinking was that artists who were
headed down this way may consider adding a week to their stay and participate
in the Key Biscayne Art Festival prior to the Coconut
grove Art Festival.
It worked....
Stalls that were practically being given
away to the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, the local newspaper, and others were
now being filled and reserved in advance, paid for in real cash, by artists
who had real art.
Since this time, the quality of Art and
artists participating has risen to the class of first class...World class.
Just like the Island itself.
We look forward to seeing you there! |
