Columbus Day Regatta - An easy day trip from Key Biscayne
Columbus Day Regatta - 2009 - Elliott Key
Summed up in one word....PERFECT!
Summed up in three words, PERFECT. SAILING. PARTY.
The weather could not have been better.  Thousands of boats heading south.  Destination....Elliott Key.
Every year at about this time a sailing regatta takes place in Biscayne Bay.  Sailboats from all around the world
come here to participate in the Columbus Day Regatta.  A fabulous sailing race and should you want information
about the Columbus Day Regatta Sailboat Race and  entering, please click here.
Typically the race takes place over the weekend but the party begins on the Thursday night prior to the weekend.
Twelve to sixteen miles  (depending on the course that you take to get there) off of the shores of Key Biscayne,
you can't miss the thousands of boats  anchored on the leeward side of Elliott Key with one goal in mind.
PARTY!!!
Boats next to boats next to boats....its all about the fun today
For four nights and four days the music from thousands of boats fill the air disrupted every so often by the sounds
of air horns and ships horns by mariners who desire to get other mariners attention.
Yes, it is Mardi Gras on the water  and this year was no exception.  The 'party' started on Thursday night as
boaters found their spots, dropped their anchors, fired up their barbeques, turned up the sound system,
and started the celebration of countless young and older getting together to 'let it all hang out'.  (If you get my drift)
Although the celebration starts off looking like a really busy anchorage where everyone is wearing all of their
clothing and music is kept to a decent listening level.  As the adult beverages begin to accomplish
their desired effect, the music gets louder, and like a siren's song, seems to attract even more boaters
until the leeward side of Elliott Key is nothing more than countless boats 'rafted up' together.
This years weather could not have been better  and on this Columbus Day, there are many many people
scattered all over Dade and Broward county not able to move very freely today due to massive amounts
of sunshine falling on parts of a person's body that it normally does not fall on.  People might be sitting down
a little bit more gingerly thanks to sun burn on their rear ends.
Drop your anchor and join the fun - stereos blasting and the waters fine!
Nobody wants to wear sunscreen, nobody feels the pain, its all good...the music plays and thousands of
total strangers move to the different beats of loud dancing music forgetting all inhabitions.
Some feel that this gathering is a call to become a stripper for a weekend....in fact most people who
could very well be living conservative lives every other day of the year.  The week after the four day
party in the sun is no doubtedly filled with dental hygenists, bank tellers, stewardesses, waitresses,
and para-legals with tremendous tans with those lobster red rear ends (and various other body parts)
hidden beneath conservative dress, conservative jobs, polite manners, and massive hangovers.
There is always next year to get it right but for this year.....what a party!
