Cape Florida, one of the oldest place-names in the New World, forms the south end of Key Biscayne. Noted since the 1820s for its "tropical complexion", its rich marine and land resources, supported fishing and hunting villages of the prehistoric Tequesta people. Juan Ponce de Leon discovered this island in 1513. The first recorded settler in South Florida, Pedro Fornells, who was born on the Island of Minorca, cultivated the ancient tract in 1805. Mary Ann Davis of St. Augustine bought 175 acres from Fornells and sold 3 acres to the U.S. Government. The Cape Florida Lighthouse built in 1825, restored in 1996, is on the National Register of Historic Places and is now owned by the State of Florida. It is South Florida's oldest landmark. |
