BANYAN TREES

The Banyan or fig trees were first introduced to Key Biscayne around 1912 by W.J. Matheson as markers to define the corners of cultivated fields.  The Banyan is native to India and Africa and is often less famous for its fruit than for its multiple trunks.  Pruned by Hurricane Andrew in 1992, specimen trees at the Crandon Park Overview continue to grow in circumference, extending umbrella-like crowns over their unique supporting pillars.
