| An ancient mangrove forest rims the west side of the island. The mangroves of the tropics, called the “Walking Tree” by native Floridians, grow on long-legged roots, and are responsible for shoring up and enlarging the western edges of barrier islands. Over the centuries, the historical “overflowed land” along Biscayne Bay has been an important estuary for marine creatures and a refuge for native wildlife. | ![]() |
