FRESH WATER HABITATS
Traditional habitats attracting human, plant, and animal communities, freshwater ponds and springs are part of Key Biscayne's historic and environmental heritage.  In 1513, Juan Ponce de Leon discovered Key Biscayne springs while seeking the legendary Fountain of Youth.  Archeological investigations verify human habitats near freshwater sources on the island since around 1200 A.D.
