Crandon Park opens
on Key Biscayne, Florida for families and for all
Indeed, it was a different
time, Miami Dade, circa 1947. Crandon Park offered families something
to do.
The following was released
by Dade County Parks in the days before Crandon Park was opened.

and his exuberant sister (fictitious names to suggest the park is for everyone),
Crandon Park on Key Biscayne furnishes the answer to the frequent family
question of what to do.
The park provides healthful enjoyment for every member of the family. Similarly, Crandon Park offers a "different" recreational "find" for South Florida's visitors to be rediscovered and enjoyed time and again during their holidays here. More than two miles of the best in ocean bathing, without dangerous undertow or battering surf, since the entire beach is protected by a natural reef, offers a year's calendar of single day vacations. Long stretches of clean, sparkling sand are here for those who enjoy their sea splashing between luxurious lolls of sun tanning. Bath houses permit changes from swim togs to picnic or street wear. For those who feel they've absorbed sufficient sun for the day are more than 1,000 shady acres of landscaped picnic and play areas. Coconut palms - 1,000 plus - which once formed a portion of an extensive copra plantation, create a tropical setting not supplicated in North America. This exotic scene is so unique that major motion picture companies have sent casts and cameras thousands of miles from California to Key Biscayne to discover the only North American 'location" which captures the aura of the South Sea Isles - with Florida improvements. In addition to the palms, some 1,000 other shade trees further enhance the attractions of Dade County's super picnic domain. Grown in the county's own nursery, these trees are native Florida mahogany, pongam and bucida. Ten to 15 feet tall, five to six years old, they particularly were selected to provide the maximum in comfortable shade. Barbecue pits, outdoor grills, constructed to help the highlighting chef impart that special outdoor taste, are scattered throughout the spacious picnic grounds. Tables and benches are available to accommodate a sylvan luncheon for two or the largest club, Sunday school or other group picnic. Pure drinking water from the mainland courses through miles of pipe with pressure maintained by the parks department's own pumping station. Five miles of bituminous surfaced limestone rock roads wind through the park. Parking space is here now for nearly 4,000 autos and will be increased to serve 20,000 cars. Regular bus service will transport those who do not drive. Refreshment stands abet family larders or appease appetites of those who fail to arrive prepared with old fashioned bulging picnic lunch baskets. The draftsman's table is replete with plans for the development of needed facilities. These additions will be completed as soon as time and budget provisions permit. In these plans much though has been devoted to the year round pleasure of all age groups. Major features to be installed as soon as practicable include: archery and driving ranges, 18 hole golf course and club house, shuffleboard courts, horseshoe lanes, table tennis, softball and baseball diamonds, preschool play areas, restaurants, beach shops, park administration building, additional bath house facilities, riding academy, miniature railway and marinas for power and sailboats. Yes, you'll find the answer to worthwhile and wholesome recreation goals with new Crandon Park augmenting Haulover Park, Matheson Hammock and other outing meccas provided by Dade County. Quoting A.D. Barnes, superintendent of Dade County Parks: " Recreational facilities will exceed those of any other public park in the country when present projected plans become realities." |
