The Village of Key
Biscayne's Dumpster Diving Program - Sometimes open, allways full
Dive on in! The Village with a
heart helps each of us to identify with those less fortunate everyday.
Motto "Hey, its YOUR trash, now shut up and pay your taxes!"
With an annual budget of millions upon millions of dollars
and vast projects underway, probably one of the most disturbing and obvious
flaws with our elected councilbeings is simply that the most simple needs
of the residents of Key Biscayne are ignored. This dumpster
is not only impossible for the average elderly citizen to put an old lawn
chair or palm frond into since the mouth of the dumpster is some seven
feet off of the ground, the dumpster is constantly closed.
Not to mention disgusting to look at.
Why would we as taxpayers entrust our
'officials' so busy walking around being 'honorable' with the foresight
to have our collective best interest on the forefront or their minds and
agendas when the most basic of needs are ignored for years and years
and years. By the way, this dumpster is a stones throw away from
the front door of the Council Chambers, Police department, Fire department
and behind the Sun Trust Bank. When Dade County provided dumpsters
for the residents of Key Biscayne, there was 4 of them, side by side, with
a ramp that one could drive their car, truck or back up their trailer onto
so that they could unload their yard clippings or other rubbish by DROPPING
it into the container located BELOW their car. How much I would personally
give to see any one of our council heaving a hefty bag full of leaves or
trying to empty a dusty trash can from the bumper of their car into this
abortion of a service provided by our Government. There are numerous
travesties of this nature that are so simple that we will endeavor to document
in hopes of getting some type of action. These are the same people
who are promoting the "Crandon Beautification". Sorry,
but the word DUH just applies. Maybe each of you can tell us how,
and why this is being ignored (more specifically what is your individual
excuse for turning a blind eye to the obvious), and what the BIG plan is
to get a decent dumpster that we can use that is not closed during the
hours we are not working.

Every Saint Augustine engineer
("yard ape") on the Key knows to get to the dumpster first thing in the
morning. All interviewed say it is full by 8 AM each day if it is
opened at all. These pictures were taken every day over a one week period.
Now, if the trash was in my front yard until I could dispose of it, I would
be ticketed. Nice huh?

Please notice that the trash is different
and this is not a bunch of pictures taken the same day. What you
see is the way that we found it. Apparently this day, someone needed
to push a wheelbarrow or something through the hedge and the "Dumpster
closed" sign was the perfect size. It did make it back into action
the following day. Also please notice that each and every day, this
thing is packed jammed full.

The travesty continues
and the dumpster took a Dumpster Union mandatory day off today. No
doubt we were all charged for this fine service of the non existent Dumpster.
This
village approved sign meets all of the Village of Key Biscayne zoning
regulations for signs. Meanwhile, otherwhere on the island,
Garage
sale signs are pulled down, and real estate signs are counted
in the front yards of houses for rental or sale. Priorities in action.

Day 6 on the left (with the village
approved sign proudly displayed) shows more mounds above the 'fill line'
clearly marked on the Dumpster. We probably have to pay more if the
trash is above that line. Anyone want to check into that? Day 7 on
the right, the Dumpster is open for business (or someone more than likely
forgot to lock the gate) Again, mounds completely fill the container
and our first class photography team did not investigate the liquid substance
oozing out of the bottom. Ask yourself. Would you
back your car up next to this mess? OH, that is another
thing... When Dade County provided this service, there was actually a man
permanently staffed to sweep up the mess and to make sure that there were
no nails or broken glass around where tires could be punctured or someone
could get hurt. Once a container was full, he would radio a truck
that would come and remove the full container. This meant that if
you went to dump at 2 PM and all of the 4 containers were full, you could
come back in an hour or so and there would at least be an empty one available.
Ah, the good ole days.

A fortunate Lawn Technician wonders
why he bought a dump truck in between removing a truck load one handful
at a time. Nothing like the smell of standing in hot wet grass, rotten
coconuts, cockroaches, and Big Bite remains from 7 11 on a hot day without
a breeze. Meanwhile, some complaining customer over on Ridgewood
who hasn't paid last months bill is wondering why his lawn service is late
getting there and is complaining on this man in the dumpster voice
mail. Can our village representatives do better than this?
Isn't our community worth more? No. Now just concentrate
on why we need a few more million for the beautification of Crandon Boulevard
and sit back down. Your minutes are up. Thank you for attending.
Don't forget to vote for me because I will agree with you that every concern
of yours is my platform for nomination.
