A Community Center is born - What you do and don't get....

The Key Biscayne Community Center had the official Ribbon Cutting Ceremony on October 19, 2004.  The cutting was to be held at 6:00 and was cut a little after 7:00.  The turnout of curious Key Biscayners and every overtime employee of the Village was on hand along with all ten candidates running for Village offices and their surrogates. Add to that the surrogates of the two Mayoral candidates and the candidates themselves, there were 49 people there.  Plus their children.
Kidding.  The place was mobbed.
The trained eye could tell that most who turned out were on Village payroll as is typical for most Village
Sponsored events.  There was plenty of people on hand to eat the free food being passed out and walk around the new Community Center imagining themselves shooting hoops or swimming in the pool or lifting weights with their family or with their friends.
Ha! Not so fast.  Here is what is NOT announced.  After you pay $475 a year for a family of 4, you get to shoot hoops in the basketball court 8 - 10 pm.  The KBAC gets to use it for their programs the other times. Please notice that there would be NO place to have a game AND spectators... Or a swim meet.  Zoning would shut it down. Or the fire code.
The registration desk was humming with activity as the capacity crowd filled the streets with Golf Carts, cars and once again the obvious became evident. THERE IS NO PLACE TO PARK!!!!! HELLO????
Staffers quickly tried to get the pampered guests who were overcome by the sheer size and pretentious amenities that surrounded them to sign up and write their checks.
My two children (8 and 12) can't use the kids game room. (13 and over)
Will be in bed before the basketball court is available and since the pool is leased to a private company, who knows when they would be able to splash around.
