The basic history of the Nasdaq
100 tennis tournament : Celebrating its 20th year in
2004, the NASDAQ-100
Open is the largest tournament in the world with Title Sponsorship. When
Butch Buchholz established the tournament in 1985, it was the first newly-created
two week tennis event where men and women competed simultaneously. Located
in Delray Beach (Laver’s International Tennis Center) in its first year,
the tournament moved to Boca Raton (Boca West) in 1986, and in 1987 found
a permanent home on Miami’s Key Biscayne. In 1994, Miami-Dade County completed
and christened the Tennis Center at Crandon Park, a 30-acre expanse that
is transformed each year from a public tennis facility into a full-fledged
festival for the NASDAQ-100 Open. The Tennis Center at Crandon Park is
considered one of the finest venues and the NASDAQ-100 Open one of the
most prestigious titles in professional tennis.
