Key Biscayne NASDAQ-100
- 2003
With the exception of one day of rain,
the weather was, as usual, perfect for world class tennis for the ten days
of the Nasdaq-100 on Key Biscayne Florida. Andre Agassi wins his 6th and
Serena Williams wins her 2nd Nasdaq-100 tournament.
There is one way on and off of Key Biscayne
and this road, the Rickenbacker Causeway (which becomes Crandon Blvd. at
the entrance to that Village of Key Biscayne) passes in the front of the
Crandon Tennis Center, that is the facility where the Nasdaq-100 is played
every year around this time and as you can imagine, there was traffic,
and plenty of it. A 15 minute ride on or off the island takes much longer
than that now.
Fans park miles away, or right across
the street at the Crandon Park and get shuttled to the entrance to the
Nasdaq 100. From there, they will have to cross the street.
Off duty police officers man the traffic signal oblivious to the traffic
tie up that goes on for miles while a stray fan slothfully makes their
way across the road and into the tournament. There is a bumper sticker
that reads "Some of us are not on vacation".
It is all here though. The Goodyear
blimp, exhibition matches, food courts, beer, Bacardi, Mercedes, and you
can also sign up to get on the local phone companies mailing list while
you agree to the terms and conditions to have your serve 'clocked' by a
radar gun to see how fast it is that you really serve. From a chair
in the shade you can enjoy your $4.00 hot dog and watch the jumbotron showing
live action from Center Court 100 yards away and see otherwise respectful
looking businessmen set down their mixed drink and give it all that they
have got to beat their friends serve speed. After complaining about
the racquet, the sun, the speed gun, the balls, and how you cannot serve
fast in loafers then watch in disbelief that their serve is just over the
70 mph mark, a 14 year old girl will clock an 86 mph serve. The businessmen
check their pagers as they head to the Mercedes Benz tent scanning the
horizon to see if anyone else saw. Everyone else checks their pagers.
The jumbotron has matches in the background. Applause from various
matches sporadically breaks the silence.
The tournament has become a fixture
of the tennis world and is one of the 5 top tournaments in the world.
Finding a place
to stay on the Key is typically booked solid months and months in advance
with waiting lists for this period of time. The players, the coaches,
the press, the sponsors and of course the fans love to enjoy all that Key
Biscayne has to offer and use this spring break tournament as an
excuse to spend a couple of weeks here.
