MIAMI KITEBOARDING HOSTS THE FIRST WOMEN'S KITESURFING EVENT

The first women's kitesurfing event was indeed held at the northernmost beach at Crandon park beach,Key Biscayne, Miami, the entire day of Saturday March 20th 2004, from 10.00AM till 7.00PM with literally hundreds of spectators and participants taking in the picture perfect kitesurfing weather.  Tourists and locals alike would stop, pull out their cameras and take pictures of the dozens of kites flying on the waters as hundreds of kites sat ready for action on the beach.  With the long lines of each kite, and the sheer numbers of people and kites, it would seem that an accident would be inevitable.  There were no injuries, close calls, or accidents.
The promise was that there would be emphasis  put on safety, and accessibilty of that sport for women and children was fulfilled by action.  It would be difficult to compare this event and gathering with any other and the inherent danger with winds in excess of 20 knots.  People helping people.  Personal responsibility. Being keenly aware of the surroundings at all times made this a safe and fun time for all.
Over eighty women signed up for the free clinics for beginners, intermediates , and safety demos, that went on all day.
The sponsors gave away prizes that included Airfare for 2 anywhere in the Caribbean, a one week kite surfing vacation in the Carribbean, harnesses, wet suits, and all types of equipment.
With the success of this years event, next years women's kitesurfing event promises to be so much larger and even better still.  It was truly difficult to believe that this was a first as the organizers and sponsors did such a fantastic job running a smooth session on the air / water.
