The beaches of Key Biscayne the day of
the evacuation as shown in the
picture directly below. Since the
winds came from the west - southwest,
the beach erosion was the best that we
could have hoped for.
Had the winds come off of the Atlantic,
it would have been a completely
different story.
A feeder band from Hurricane Frances hits
during low tide with only a light
chop on the waters on the leeward side
of Key Biscayne.
A gust that was typical of the day, up
to Hurricane Force, whips stinging
sand northward.
A closer look at the remaining chairs that
were on TOP of the sand a day earlier
is a clear indicator of how much sand
was blown around in 24 hours.
One wonders how many chairs this beachfront condo started with.....
Sonesta Beach Hotel and Villas removed
and stored all of their beach chairs and
hammocks that grace the palm trees on
the beach. Three days ago, this hotel
and beach were filled with people and
activity.
A sharp contrast on the beach at low tide
to the bay side of Key Biscayne
where boats are being pushed into the
mangroves by the high winds and
waves. Rarely would you see the
undertow as seen here on Key Biscayne.
It is the 2 miles of gradual of ocean
depth from the beach to the Gulf Stream
that affords Key Biscayne such calm seas
and beautiful beaches even during
high winds.
