Although we missed the brunt of the Hurricane
Jeanne winds and storm surge, you can see that on the left
is a picture of Virginia Key (the last
island that you cross before reaching Key Biscayne) with Key Biscayne
on the left horizon of both pictures as
it looks with a storm approaching at low tide. The picture on the
right
shows you how the tidal changes are affected
by a Hurricane in the vicinity. Although Hurricane Jeanne was
a couple of hundred miles away from us
when this picture was taken, it was Low Tide. Clearly not normal.

The waters of Biscayne Bay cover the road
as winds vary between 40 - 60 mph but this is as bad as it got.
We all woke up this morning and the sun
was shining and everything was back to normal except for that
knot in our collective stomachs for our
friends and neighbors living further North up the Coast. This has
clearly been a record year with 4 Hurricanes
hitting the State of Florida in the past 6 weeks.
Last week it was Hurricane Ivan that we
all looked at, the week before that it was
Hurricane Frances.
It is a feeling all of it's own to have
the entire community evacuating the island every weekend, and preparing
for possible strikes during the week.
It is difficult to get any work done yet we would gladly have to prepare
for 10 Hurricanes that do not hit than
endure the one that does. Take it from all of us who have chosen
to
'ride out the storm'. Don't. It
is not fun to have your whole family in a hall closet with winds blowing
through
the house with pressure so great that
it literally drives rain through concrete and paint and into your home
in the form of blasting mist as you are
deafened by the sounds of trees breaking, transformers exploding,
lightning and thunder every few seconds
that is green and orange while cold, hungry, tired, and wet under
a mattress just in case the house comes
down on top of you. No phone. No power. No 911. It lasts many times
for 6 - 14 hours before you dare let go
of your grip of the mattress that is shielding you. There is nothing dry
in the house. But it is the sound.
Like a train horn blowing for hours. You cannot get away from it.
Yeah right. As if.
You were warned. There is nothing
like it and most would choose a root canal before riding one out.

Remember these boats from Hurricane Frances? They were wounded
then (click
here), but Jeanne finished them.
It is the price of paradise.
We choose to live here because it is so
worth it. Now imagine how nice that must be. Come on down!
