Fowey Rocks Lighthouse - Fowey Light was built 6 miles off the shore of Key Biscayne since Cape Florida lighthouse was built 3 miles back from a dangerous rock ledge if a ship was to make it past the Fowey Rocks.  Construction on Fowey Lighthouse began in 1875 and the old lighthouse reservation on Soldier Key was used as a supply depot and barracks.  Fowey Light was fist lit on June 15,1878 and Cape Florida was extinguished at that time.  The total cost for the project was $163,015 .  Fowey Rocks lighthouse is built in about 30 - 35 feet of water on a reef and has kept local and International ship traffic in the International waters some 12 miles offshore.
