About Annika M. Akerlund-Tarajano
Annika M. Akerlund-Tarajano

Annika was born and raised in Sweden.  She is a naturalized U.S. citizen and has lived on Key Biscayne since 1982.  After moving here she soon became a single mother  when her Cuban born husband Jose R. Tarajano died.   She  jogs the beautiful paths of Key Biscayne, sails on Biscayne Bay and the Atlantic ocean, plays tennis or exercises her 'green thumb' gardening in and around her home.   Nevertheless, she regards raising  her son Alex as her most important accomplishment.  Alex is currently enrolled and studying at the University of Florida.

Annika is a proud member of the Key Biscayne Yacht Club and enjoys her work as a legal assistant / paralegal   at a Miami law firm.

Prior to moving to Key Biscayne she lived for extended periods in England, France, New York City and the Caribbean and brings her experiences and world view to this world class community.  Like many residents of Key Biscayne, she wants to preserve the easygoing, quiet, middle-class characteristics of our beach side community.

Annika finds local politics fascinating,  watching with great interest how our elected officials and our local government use our tax dollars..  Annika  initiated the referendum on the recreation center in 2003 to "settle the matter" as the Chair of the Petitioner's Committee.  She is also very interested in the Channel 16 issue and is actively working on the concept that the programming should be decided by  a 'viewpoint neutral' panel and not elected officials.   "What's worse than government run media?" she says.

Far too many citizens of the "Island Paradise" of Key Biscayne seem  detached from  the inner workings of our local government.   It sometimes takes a person like Annika to bring issues to the forefront and in plain language attempt to inform the voting populace  what certain issues will mean if implemented, since government often appears to confuse instead of clarify issues.  Annika helps to put things into perspective for the average person and tries to engage people into the process.  We share an island with distinct needs and our local  issues  are often different from those on the mainland.

Empowering people, educating voters, and all the time keeping herself briefed on the latest from the Council Chambers qualifies Annika to speak on local issues with the authority of a person who cares about today and tomorrow.  We invite you to consider Annika's perspective on current events as listed below:
