Consistently voted among the top ten
beaches in the world, two of Key Biscayne's beaches make the grade and
for very obvious reasons. The miles of slowly graduating water depth
have created an environment that is optimal for swimming, diving, and children
as there are no rip currents to speak of with the exception being during
the times that there is a tropical storm when nobody is swimming anyways.
The water is inches deep at the waterline and moves at the slightest angle
towards 4 - 6 feet deep and then once again to about 8 - 12 feet at which
point the seagrass and natural live reefs provide a barrier for Key Biscayne.
The water dept stays at 8 - 12 feet deep for over one mile offshore moving
slowly deeper to 30 feet, 45 feet, 60 feet, 100 feet and it is at these
depths that there are many ships sunken intentionally to create yet another
barrier in the artificial reef program. There is actually a 727 aircraft
sunk in about 60 feet of water which makes for a wonderful scuba dive and
bragging rights back home for many. At around 5 miles offshore, the
water quickly deepens to 300 feet, 600 feet, and well over 1,000 feet deep.
This is a great advantage for sportsfishing right off of Key Biscayne and
provides for wonderful beaches onshore.
