With a height of approximately 78
feet over mean tide, the William Powell Bridge (known to cyclists as the
"Miami Mountain") experiences a rare moment where there is no pedestrian
or motor vehicle traffic. This picture was taken standing atop the
retaining barrier that divides the space between the vehicle traffic and
the pedestrian path. The beach on the right side of the picture is Virginia
Beach (Hobie Beach), the left is the Rusty Pelican Restaurant (with unsurpassed
views of the Miami and Brickell skyline) and the Rickenbacker Marina.
This is the Rickenbacker causeway that leads us on and off of Key Biscayne
from the mainland. There is a toll gate at the entrance, so be prepared
to empty your wallet at the start. Originally, the toll was ten cents
and was to stay erected until which time the first bridge and road was
paid for. The toll went up to twenty five cents and then to one dollar.
The moral of the story? Never mind, just pay your dollar and enjoy
the view.
From this point, it is approximately 4
miles to the entrance to the Village of Key Biscayne limits.
