Bomb Squad on Key Biscayne - Find hand grenade in Trash
What a way to wake up in the morning.....
Apparently a garbage truck was on routine trash pickup, removing piles
of
debris left in front of residences from
Hurricane Katrina when a Debris Engineer / Collection Specialist (Garbageman)
showed his collegue on the back of the
truck the little 'goodie' that he just found. After his
collegue jumped off of the moving truck
and yelled to him his dissatisfaction
at being located in the same proximity as him, he quickly and loudly
instructed him on the
proper procedure to handling such debris.
The hand grenade was laid down in the next garbage pile on the street,
and then
proceded to 7-11 for a Big Gulp and a
phonecall to the Key Biscayne Police Department.
With the hand grenade sitting unguarded
on a trash pile, Key Biscayne Police quickly got the callers name, address,
phone number,
location of from where the person was
calling, an officer was sent over to review and confirm the 'questionable'
debris.
Upon inspecting the piece of debris in
question, the rest of the Key Biscayne Police on duty came by to
take a look.
Some yellow tape was put up to secure
the area with Police cars closing the street and the City of Miami Bomb
Squad
was called in to get this situation under
control. They were here in 15 minutes from the Miami International
Airport.
It would have been here 2 minutes quicker
but they had to stop to pay the toll. Just kidding. The toll
only took 30 seconds.
The hand grenade was shot by a special
machine (similar to a one shot shotgun on wheels) safely from around 100
yards
away and once the grenade was consider
inert, it was recovered by the City of Miami Bomb Squad.
A special note to our neighbors, please
dispose of your hand grenades properly. Thank you.
