Sailboat passes under the WIlliam Powell Bridge.  It is a fixed bridge with
a horizontal clearance of 120' and a vertical clearance of 76' (at center)
The William Powell Bridge is also known as the 'Miami
Mountain' by cyclists who train up and down the bridge every day.  It is
much harder to peddle a bike up and down this bridge than one may think.
This is the second bridge in a series of bridges to make it to Key Biscayne.
The lower bridge in the background is what we used to have out here on
the island but since it was a draw bridge, we would have MAJOR traffic
congestion on the weekends and it made working off of Key Biscayne a
very questionable undertaking.  Of course there were many times pregnant
mothers had to wait in traffic while sailboats  continued on their way.
This was not a real popular idea but when traffic backed up to the point
where residents and visitors alike had to wait 5 - 8 hours to make a 5 mile
drive, the new William Powell Bridge was built.
