Hurricane Harbor Resturant.....the
good ole days....
Come on to Key Biscayne and look to the
right. There is a place named 'Stefanos' there.
It was not always this way. It used
to be known as the Hurricane Harbor Lounge. Eventually there
was a 'watering hole' opened next door
named 'The Keyhole'.
If the 'Keyhole' was not a real hole of
a bar, complete with a nightly invasion of Key Rats, there was not
a bar that could be called a 'hole'.
It was a hole. A real favorite of locals and international travellers
alike.
There was a night where two of the lady
patrons rode in on horseback.
These were the days that are now called
the 'good ole days'. They were not all good, but they were
without question different. One
look at the menu of the Hurrican Harbor Lounge and you will immediately
notice the ridiculously high priced menu
that only allowed the well to do the privilege of dining there.
What a RIPOFF!
How many places on Key Biscayne today
even offer 'sweet potatoes' on the menu?
Or, Native Pompano? A time gone
by to be sure. The demographics have changed and it is doubtful
that you can find a place within 100 miles,
if at alll, that offers "Piping hot coffee" anymore.
So, with all of this in mind, let's enjoy
this picture taken from the corner of Harbor and Crandon towards
what today is the Discount Gas station
(accross the street from the Shell station), Stefanos, and La Carreta.
The first building in this picture is
of course, the gas station, attached to that is what was "The Key Hole"
which
was a local bar, (now the package store),
the Hurricane Harbor Lounge, and the building with the pointy top
is what is now La Carreta Resturant.
The film was black and white, the roads, most of them, were paved,
there were no sidewalks, traffic lights,
or seatbelt or bicycle helmet laws. No cell phones, computers,
playstation, color TV, GPS, Crandon Gardens
was a Zoo with real Lions, Key Colony was a Golf Course,
and many of us enjoyed catching Red Snapper
off of the beach where Sonesta is today (off of live coral reefs)
and cooking it atop the coals of
a bonfire built from Coconut Palm fronds with the Atlantic Ocean putting
many of
us to sleep after dinner as the full moon
would rise to give us light to walk home. Without the thought of
being kidnapped.
Come early and beat the crowds.
Please remember to wipe the sand off your feet at the door. Thank
you.
