Key Biscayners prepare for Hurricane Rita
Way down southeast of Key Biscayne, there is a tropical storm that is on the verge of becoming Hurricane Rita.
A tropical storm becomes a hurricane when there are sustained winds of at least 74 mile per hour near the 'eyewall'
of the hurricane.  For real time information and satellite images of this and any other tropical weather, here is the
link to the National Weather Service National Hurricane Center (located in Coral Gables Florida).
Pictured here are residents and guests alike lining up to fill up their gas tanks.  This comes on the heels of all of
the construction on the roads of Key Biscayne that only further complicates matters.  Although Hurricane Rita is expected
to move way south of Key Biscayne, just having been through the feeder bands of Hurricane Katrina a couple
of weeks ago, we all realize how fragile living on a barrier island can be.  Preparations are always a good idea.
That is what is so ironic about having only 2 gas stations on Key Biscayne.
Twenty five years ago, when Key Biscayne had a fraction of the current population and traffic, there were
six different gas stations on Key Biscayne.  Several with actual shops where one could get car repairs.
Now with our own government and committees for committees, someone is forgetting something very basic.
Might be a good time for our elected officials to prepare for the needs of all of us who live and visit here.
