"
Please list me in your Key
Rat Directory. I was a lost Key Rat until I happened upon Key-
Biscayne.Com
while surfing the net tonight. My family lived on the Key from 1953-1958
at
300 Greenwood Drive.
We lived in one of the Mackle houses that were built back then. I
went to grade school at
what was then, the new Key Biscayne Elementary School. On
Friday night's the school
would show action flicks in the cafeteria. This was a big deal back
then! As a little kid, my
friends and I would sneak behind Nixon's house and play on the his
dock, until secret service
men would chase us out of there. I even got to meet Nixon in the
Island barber shop once
when I was about 6 years old. We had our hair cut at the same
time.
Some of my other memories
from then, I used to eat lunch at the old drug store during the
school week, as the new
school did not have a cafeteria when it first opened; going to the
zoo, had a really neat train
that you could ride on and circled the zoo & Crandon Park (you
could also get a ride on
the giant tortoises); the old Matheson House on Matheson Point - it
was really scary to a little
kid back then; going to the Seaquarium when it first opened; the
1st 7-11 that opened on
the island - another big deal!; going to the lighthouse before it was
restored; giant landcrabs
walking down our street after it had rained; roller skating at the
Catholic Church on their
sidewalks - best place on the Key to roller skate; no
airconditioning; and, Dr
Handwerker, he was our family doctor for the years that we lived on
the Key. Many fond
memories him. Many fond memories of the Key!"
