| Perhaps better phrased, who is a Key
Rat and who coined the phrase Key Rat? To answer the second part
of the question first, it will forever be shrouded in mystery who the first
to call someone from the Key a 'Key Rat' was. This will remain this
way until which time we perhaps have an ole timer contact us here at the

the honor of 'Key Rat' was first bestowed. The first part of the
question regarding who is a Key Rat is defined in the broadest sense by
' anyone who lives on Key Biscayne'.
This was, until December 22, at 12:30 AM a highly controversial issue. At this time, webmaster of key-biscayne.com Eddie Dziura finds his research into the illusive origin of the most asked question on the Key for generations.....Where in the world did the words Key Rat come from? After years of instense and tireless investigation and professional research, Eddie Dziura finds that we have for once and all time traced the word Key Rat all of the way back to 1763 when Virginia Key was first discovered. Virginia Key was known as Rat Key and the tribe of Indians living there were called Town Rats. These are literal translations from the Spanish language of William Roberts. William Roberts, in his First Discovery and Natural History of Florida (1763) wrote: "To the north hereof (Cayo de Biscayno) lies the small island of Cayo Ratones, about four miles in length, on which there is an Indian town, called Pueblo Ratones, which is the only settlement of Indians that we have any account of on the Martyres." Pueblo Ratones - Town Rats Cayo Ratones - Cayo - Key Ratones - Rats. So, the island of Virginia Key was known as the island of Key Rats. The Puritan contingency of the modern Key Rat community will not allow the honor of 'Key Rat' to be placed on just anyone who lives or has lived on Key Biscayne. To be a Key Rat is far more than the geographical location of your feet. It is a frame of mind. It is sufficiently passing the Key Rat initiation rituals that are several years in length. The terms of initiation are heavily guarded and passed on generationally to only the most trustworthy Key Rats who would rather die than reveal the terms of initiation. It is meeting a strict standard of conduct underscored by a sworn code of silence. A true Key Rat would not 'rat' on another Key Rat. It is a well known fact in the Key Rat community that many Key Rats of high moral character have served (and or currently serve) in the FBI, DEA,ATF, US Marshals, Customs, Police and Fire Departments around the country and in the armed forces around the world. Many have become physicians and skilled and trained professionals. Attorneys and IRS agents are rare in the Key Rat community but such lapses in judgment have been recorded and most are under internal investigation. Not once has the Key Rat initiation nor the rites and rituals been disclosed. What was once an insult became an identity that was embraced by many of the young inhabitants of Key Biscayne.
