| From the humble beginnings of being from Key Biscayne and part of the
working class of American society and being called a Key Rat as an attempt
to disgrace or embarass, the term became one of endearment over the years
as the community as a whole bonded together through hurricanes and natural
disasters. Key Biscayne was secluded, joined to the mainland by a
drawbridge that would sometimes get stuck in the upright position. |

There was one drugstore which had the post office built into it and
a dining counter where you could always find a friendly face. Strong
relationships between friends and neighbors were uniquely developed in
this environment. People depended on each others in time of celebration
and in times of need. Being called a Key Rat was becoming an honor
to be associated with others of strong character. |
When Nixon and Kennedy came to visit the Key Biscayne Hotel and after
Nixon's eventual election as President of the United States, Key Biscayne
was on the International map as 'The Winter White House'.
If you were considered a Key Rat at this point, you were 'rubbing shoulders'
with the President.
Key Rats took their proper place in the public mind.
To be a Key Rat is to be self-reliant, dependable, with a strong love
for country, family, and the island of Key Biscayne. Whenever
a true Key Rat comes to Key Biscayne, he or she is coming home. |
