Crandon Beach North - Kite For Girls 2005

Cruise ships pass on the horizon later in the afternoon as the girls go through the drills on sea and in air.
Bright and colorful kites fill the sky along North Crandon Park Beach at the 2005 Kites for Girls kitesurfing competition
and for all of those competing and for all of those who just passed by to see what and where all of this action was
coming from, it was a truly enjoyable and competitive experience.

Ultra light Aircraft from the hanger located across the Rickenbacker Causeway give their student pilots a real pelican's
view of the action on the beach and in the surf.  Kites filled the air and kites filled the beach.  Between all of the action,
people learned more about the sport of kitesurfing, children played, friends re-connected, and yet another sport finds
its home on the island paradise of Key Biscayne.  The island's steady winds off of the Atlantic Ocean give kitesurfers
the option of either kitesurfing off of the North Crandon Beach flats or, if the winds shift, atheletes head over to the
protected waters of Biscayne Bay.  Either way, it is a good day to kitesurf.

Fun fun fun.  What is not to like?  Wind, sun, surf, and plenty of sunscreen to go around. Just like last years event only bigger.
It is not all fun and games though...the competitors are wearing safety gear and safety helmets.  There is a reason for this.
While the winds off of Key Biscayne were adequate on this Saturday, there are days where the winds become very strong
and very steady.  These windy days, anyone who works, visits, or lives on the Key will notice plenty of kite surfers in the
air and on the water.  When a kite surfer goes airbourne, there are times where there is more flight than surf.
This of course means that there is a distance between the surfer and the water's surface.  Sometimes a great distance.
While there are virtually no waves off of the island of Key Biscayne, here a kitesurfer who got caught in a very large wave
in another location, is shown being helped off of the beach and to his car thanks for the help of the Crandon Park staff.
Thankfully there was the award ceremony at the Bayside Hut to look forward to.  Check out his kitesurfing trips site here.
