STILTSVILLE - A Village of structures built in the waters off Key Biscayne Florida
Just a mile or so due south of Key Biscayne, with the Cape Florida Lighthouse clearly in view are some houses that are actually built onto the flats of Biscayne Bay.
These structures are built into the finger channels which are deeper channels of water that boats can pass through. When these channels are viewed from the air, they resemble the fingers of a hand, therefore the name 'finger channels.
At low tide, it is possible to find all types of shells including conch shells.  It is unlawful to remove a living conch (pronounced konk) from the area as they are protected in State waters.  At low tide there are literally thousands of conch shells that dot the flats and are clearly visible from the finger channel.

Approaching the flats areas can be dangerous and should be approached only with great care and a capable individual positioned on the bow of the boat to provide the visual navigation necessary to successfully disembark the vesell without causing any damage to the seabeds.
